An International Chair position is available in Europôle Mer. Formed in 2004, Europôle Mer is a consortium of 16 research institutes and universities focused on ocean sciences and technology, based in West Brittany in France. Europôle Mer is funded by the French Government and major research institutions including the National Centre for Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique CNRS) and the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer Ifremer) until 2012. Europôle Mer aims at developing 5 centres of excellence and 2 European PhD network programs.
The Chair is part of the Centre of Excellence for « Global change, Ocean and Marine Ecosystems ». The mission of this Centre is to undertake interdisciplinary scientific studies on the variability of ocean climate and the impacts of climatic change on marine ecosystems in the open ocean and ocean margins. The Chair is a 4 year position starting in the second semester of 2008, in oceanic dynamics and marine ecosystems, in relation to global biogeochemical cycles and marine resources. The mission of the Chair is to develop research activities and to spark off integrated and interdisciplinary programmes linking climate, ocean dynamics and biogeochemistry within the Europôle Mer. In parallel, the candidate will participate to the communication and collaboration strategy to ensure international visibility of Europôle Mer activities.
The Chair will be hosted by the « European Institute of Marine Studies », Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer, IUEM (UBO, CNRS, INSU). He/she is strongly encouraged to use (or create) experimental opportunities at sea, and will have access to national and local computational means. The Centre of Excellence « Global change, Ocean and Marine Ecosystems » will provide scientific and technical support on marine disciplines. Funds for 3 years of postdoc will be immediately available to assist the Chair.
Applicants must hold a PhD diploma or equivalent experience in marine sciences with a high level of expertise in his/her research area. A minimum of 3 years of postdoc experience in ocean research is required. Applicants must provide evidence of their experience in animating a research team, and be able to foster international collaborations. Ability to work in English is essential and the international dimension of the successful candidate will be critical. Experience in fundraising for research projects will be an advantage.
Gross annual salary range will depend upon the experience of the candidate. Lecturing opportunities in the expertise area of the successful candidates will be available.
